Walk into any sporting goods store and you'll see shelves full of ammunition promising blistering speeds, harder hits, and longer kills. The truth is, none of that matters if you're shooting the wrong shot size for the bird you're hunting.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

A lot of hunters automatically reach for larger pellets thinking they'll hit harder. While larger shot carries more energy, it also means fewer pellets in the shell. Fewer pellets create thinner patterns, which can leave holes big enough for birds to slip through.

The goal isn't to hit a duck with one pellet. The goal is to put multiple pellets into the bird's vital areas.

Match the Shot to the Hunt

#5 Steel

Our favorite all-around waterfowl load.

If you hunt puddle ducks over decoys inside 40 yards, #5 steel gives you excellent pattern density while still carrying plenty of energy to cleanly kill birds.

#4 Steel

A great choice when birds are finishing a little farther out or you're hunting mixed bags.

It balances pellet count with increased downrange energy and performs well on everything from mallards to wigeon and gadwalls.

#3 Steel

Perfect for bigger ducks or windy days when birds don't want to finish quite as close.

It gives you more retained energy while still providing solid pattern density.

#2 Steel

When late-season mallards, divers, or geese are on the menu, #2 steel shines.

Larger pellets penetrate better on bigger birds, but remember—you'll have fewer pellets in every shell.

Speed Isn't Everything

Some manufacturers push shells running 1,500-1,700 FPS because bigger numbers sell.

The problem?

Higher velocity often means increased recoil, more shooter fatigue, and sometimes blown patterns.

We've found that around 1,300-1,350 FPS offers an excellent balance of pattern quality, manageable recoil, and reliable performance. Consistent patterns kill more birds than raw velocity ever will.

Pattern Your Gun

Every shotgun is different.

The shell your buddy swears by may pattern terribly through your gun. Spend an afternoon at the pattern board before opening day. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

Look for:

Even pellet distribution

No large holes in the pattern

Consistent point of impact

Enough pellet density to reliably anchor birds at your intended hunting distance
