Walk down the ammunition aisle and you'll see the same trend everywhere: faster velocities, bigger shot sizes, and bigger promises. Every year it seems another shell claims to be the hardest-hitting load ever made.
But here's the question worth asking:
If faster is always better, why do so many experienced waterfowl hunters still shoot moderate-velocity loads and smaller shot?

Pattern Density Is King
The most important factor in killing ducks isn't the speed printed on the box—it's putting enough pellets in the bird's vital area.
Every time you increase shot size, you reduce the number of pellets in your payload. Fewer pellets mean larger gaps in your pattern, and larger gaps increase the chance a bird flies through with only one or two hits—or none at all.
That's why we favor smaller shot sizes whenever they provide adequate energy for the game being hunted.
A dense, even pattern gives you more opportunities for multiple vital hits, and multiple hits are what anchor birds consistently.
Why We Like #4s and #5s
For decoying ducks, smaller shot sizes often provide the ideal balance of pellet count and downrange energy.
A quality #4 or #5 steel load delivers hundreds of pellets that create forgiving, uniform patterns without sacrificing effectiveness inside normal waterfowl hunting distances.
For hunters chasing both ducks and geese, #2 steel remains an excellent all-around option, offering additional pellet energy while still maintaining good pattern density.
The goal isn't to shoot the biggest pellet possible.
The goal is to shoot the smallest pellet that still carries enough energy to cleanly harvest the bird.
The Truth About Velocity
Velocity has become one of the biggest selling points in the ammunition industry. It's easy to advertise, and bigger numbers grab attention.
But velocity is only one part of the equation.
Pushing steel shot to extreme speeds often comes with tradeoffs:
Increased recoil
Greater shooter fatigue during long hunts
More muzzle blast
Increased potential for inconsistent patterns
That's why our philosophy centers around 1,300 feet per second.
At that velocity, our loads produce manageable recoil while delivering consistent performance and excellent patterns through a wide variety of shotguns and choke combinations.
For the vast majority of waterfowl hunting—especially over decoys—you simply don't need extreme velocity to kill birds cleanly.

The shell with the highest advertised velocity isn't automatically the shell that performs best in your gun.
